It may surprise you to know that many people take the view that it is someone else’s responsibility for their health, wellness and happiness. We sadly live in a society where it is becoming the norm to blame someone else for things which we should take responsibility for.
Where does belief come from?
It has always been there, it is part of our evolutionary self-preservation and psychological defence mechanism, it dates back to when we lived in a group and being blamed for something could mean getting kicked out of the group.
Therefore, we learned way back that you can save yourself by blaming others. If you look in the bible to the story of Adam and Eve, where Adam blames Eve, and she blames the serpent for leading them astray. Yet no one forced them to do what they did.
By extension to this the idea that our health and wellness is someone else’s responsibility is not a new one. When we look back to the 19th century people were told their health was all part of a collective or governmental responsibility.
After the second world war the first NHS like state-funded healthcare systems were made available. 1948 saw the NHS launched in Manchester and soon it spread all over the land.
Gradually people have begun to see they must take responsibility for their health, however, often circumstances beyond their control can make that impossible. Poverty, lack of work, poor housing, drainage all have an effect.
We do not live in a society where everyone has access to good health care, unless you have the money to buy what you need. We still live in a society that for the greater part, talks about mental and physical health as if they were two separate things. This leaves us far short of what we need and should have.
There is a solution which could make a big difference to the health of all in our society and that would make big changes across the country.
This is where I will leave this blog, however, join me for the next blog due on the 17th of August to find out what is available to make such a big difference.
